Meet our District Teacher of the Year, Science Teacher Mrs. Lara Haggerty!

From RI's Narragansett Teacher of the Year- Sarah Dully:
Meet Mrs. Haggerty, a 9th-grade biology teacher at The Greene School (part of the Rhode Island League of Charter Public Schools) who radiates calm confidence mixed with contagious enthusiasm! She brings structure, spark, and stamina to her instruction, making science come alive for every student.

Walking into Mrs. Haggerty’s classroom, it is immediately clear that this is a place of deep learning. From word walls to driving questions about “zombie fires,” her models and visuals reflect the curriculum she champions. For the curious mind, a plethora of science books and updated National Geographics are always within reach. And you certainly can’t miss the monkey stuffed animal hanging from the rafters!

Mrs. Haggerty’s students know exactly what to expect from the very beginning of class. As one student put it: “The routine we have in biology class is like stretching before a workout.” The agenda, posted clearly on the board, guides the flow, while the Daily Learning Target (DLT) is read aloud by students to anchor the lesson and set the tone for the period.

Like the seasoned teacher she is, Mrs. Haggerty has students review their exit ticket data from the previous lesson to address misconceptions before moving forward. To make sure everyone was on the same page for the day’s task, she led a targeted session of direct instruction to review the mechanics of a strong hypothesis.

Then came the coolest part...the experiment! Mrs. Haggerty had students helping every step of the way. One student measured water, another carefully prepped plant parts, and a third determined which water receptacle to use, all in preparation to measure CO2 production. This wasn’t just a quick demo; it was the start of a multi-day investigation that will carry on into the next class!

It’s easy to see why she is such a vital part of The Greene School community. They are rightfully proud to have this District Teacher of the Year as a functional “cell” in their educational DNA!

The Greene School has applied for an exciting opportunity to expand our school in the future to include grades 6–8 (starting in 2027 at the earliest). Our commitment to hands-on, experiential learning, outdoor education, and a strong Crew culture where every student is known, valued, and challenged will remain the same for all grades at TGS. We believe that bringing our model to the middle grades will allow us to nurture curiosity, build strong academic and social foundations earlier, and better prepare students for success in high school and beyond. Your input and support are essential for our short-term and long-term planning. We are at the beginning of the process and it will take time
and collective effort to reach this goal. Keep an eye on our website and social media for updates on our possible expansion and how you can help support it!

This year marked the 11th international trip for TGS. As always, students prepared themselves for the experience through a deep-dive into the topic and countries during Intensive Week. This year's focus was Bearing Witness: Holocaust Studies. Our students returned transformed from their journey through Poland and Germany, where they bore witness to Holocaust history firsthand.
Standing at Auschwitz-Birkenau and Dachau, walking through the streets of the Warsaw and the former Ghetto, and seeing memorials of commemoration and remembrance, they've gained more than historical knowledge—they've embraced their responsibility as global citizens. We spent considerable time grappling with the rise of Hitler and the Nazi party through the 1920s and 1930s, reflecting on something we heard from a local Warsaw resident: 'There was enough time to stop them". We are proud of these student leaders who return ready to stand against indifference and hatred - ready to actively contribute to a better, more just world.

The Greene School is very thankful to our Head of School, Joshua Laplante, for his dedicated leadership over the past 9 years. Josh was hired in 2015 after a very thorough search by the Board of Directors and our stakeholders. Joshua Laplante is a champion for students, committed to their success and learning every single day. He is dedicated to the environmental mission of The Greene School and has used his time as the Head of School to create a learning environment rich in opportunities for students.
Josh has been instrumental in developing the AP program and dual enrollment program at TGS, as well the work ready program. He has forged strong relations with environmental groups in Rhode Island, and has developed our upcoming Environmental Engineering CTE program. He has strengthened TGS in so many ways, earning us the recognition of being the top charter high school in Rhode Island ( Niche ratings).
We will miss his intelligence, compassion, dedication, and vision as he goes on to join the Rhode Island Education Collective. We know he remains dedicated to the success of The Greene School and expect he will come by occasionally.
The Board of Directors has assembled a search committee for our next leader and will have an announcement later this month.
